Tom Augustine is a filmmaker and critic based in Auckland. Alongside his role as critic for View Magazine, he previously helmed NZ Herald’s Canvas Magazine’s ‘The Weekend in Film’ column from 2018-2020. Throughout his career he has had bylines in both local and international publications including Rolling Stone, Little White Lies, Metro Magazine, The Spinoff, Birth.Movies.Death, Flicks, North & South, and many more. Tom currently works as Programme Advisor for Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival, and is a screenwriter on New Zealand’s longest-running series, Shortland Street. He recently completed the short film Softies for which he was the recipient of the New Zealand Film Commission’s He Kauahi Catalyst grant and additional funds from Jane Campion’s A Wave in the Ocean programme. He is currently developing feature Arsonist for which he was awarded a New Zealand Film Commission Early Development grant.
